CrockPot Peanut Clusters
Day 356.
11 days to go until 2009. Im going to cry.
Today is the first day of Hanukkah, and there are only a few days left until Christmas. If youre entertaining for the holidays, or need any last-minute hostess gifts, these peanut clusters rock. And they make A LOT. You could easily feed the entire neighborhood on one batch, or make yourself very, very sick.
I, um, have eaten too many. Much too many. Its Susan and Amies fault. I had to change Susans original recipe because I live in one of the few places in the world without a Walmart, and couldnt find Chocolate Bark. Nor did any of our grocery stores know what chocolate bark is/was. So I improvised, and am quite pleased with the results. My waistband, not so much...
The Ingredients.
3 (16-ounce) jars lightly salted roasted peanuts (lightly salted is important!)
2 (4-ounce) boxes German Bakers Chocolate
1 (8-ounce) box Unsweetened Bakers Chocolate (there are 2 in the picture. that was wrong.)
1 (24-ounce) bag semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 tsp vanilla (not pictured because I didnt know I wanted/needed it until after the photo)
The Directions.
Use a large crockpot. This makes about 150 peanut clusters. Spray the inside of your crock with cooking spray, and place the unwrapped baking chocolate, and bars of German chocolate in the bottom. Add all the peanuts. Pour in the chocolate chips, and add vanilla. Cover and
Let cool before eating---this takes a long time---hours. Itd be best to leave them overnight so you dont pick at them. Unless you have much more will power than I do, then I suppose it would be okay. But I sort of hate you.
Package up and give away as soon as possible.
The Verdict.
These are addictive. The chocolate flavor is quite rich, and tastes dark. If you arent a fan of dark chocolate, use milk chocolate chips. The salt flavor from the nuts is subtle, but is there, and it makes your tongue itch for more.
and more.
I was thinking about nut-allergies during the night. I think you should turn these into pretzel clusters. Definitely.

Detox Do not get scammed!
Difficult to escape the detox! Under this banner, fits a successful market from an impressive array of vegetable juices with patches to stick under the feet, through the fasting cures (with or without forced marches), ionic devices or infrared and enemas. All designed to get rid of toxins responsible for all our ills and our pounds. Are we all really addicted?
Where toxins come from?
External attack ...
A real toxin, what is it? A substance produced by a microorganism, a bacterium or a fungus (microscopic), which can be toxic and thus cause serious and / or pathological disorders sometimes fatal disease. The most deadly example is the bacterium called botulin, widespread in the earth, and develops the most virulent toxins, because it causes paralysis of the entire body. Many other bacteria that secrete toxins sometimes very nasty causing food poisoning or other diseases tetanus genre.
... or internal disorders?
Furthermore, our produce many different metabolisms waste those of oxidation, urea and uric acid, lactic acid, etc. It is not strictly speaking toxins.
natural detox
Besides some real toxins are destroyed by gastric juices, we are equipped with an immune system that, when they come squatter our body develops antibodies, antitoxins and will immediately go to war against them. This battle takes place in the digestive tract, kidneys and liver, real factory cleaning our body.
The bodys natural mechanisms to eliminate
Dirt are eliminated in the urine and feces. As well as the balances of different metabolisms. Our bodies are remarkably equipped to transfer the bulk of foreign molecules.
All this happens naturally when one is healthy and when it was a relatively balanced way of life. If one suffers from a disease affecting the liver or kidneys or disrupting our metabolisms, these cleaning systems are so overwhelmed and sometimes ineffective. But in these circumstances it is not to dive into a detox ridiculous but to heal.
Detox, disposal, purification
Where does this madness of detox? United States, it seems, where more than 15,000 centers would exempt care, where we can not count the detox products nor peoples who indulge. She won Europe. And although the genre nutrition claim "clean body" is now prohibited, these products are always a hit. Is to eliminate the agenda: get rid of slag left by both food as environmental pollution, those generated by stress, etc.
Exaggerated fear of toxins
It is therefore necessary to purify hoping to erase pimples on the buttocks, bags under the eyes, swollen stomach and gurgling, cellulite and rolls of fat, while it is obviously due to the monstrous pile of toxins . But also to erase the guilt of not eating, drinking and moving as it should. Lent Catholics was the precursor of the detox!
Delusions expensive detox
Sold on the Net, there patches that sticks underfoot and will absorb excess water and harmful waste during the night (50 € box 10 ...). Evidence of their effectiveness? They became dark brown in the morning because the toxins miraculously through the body. In fact, it is the sweat that changes their color. In the same vein, there are also foot baths in water where the electrodes generating a small current. Also exist very expensive devices (200-300 €) issuing frequencies, waves, supposed ions neutralize toxins and regenerate the body.
Dangers of detox
Many potions more or less thick, greenish or marronnasses, diuretics and / or laxatives, also sold on the Net.
Side effects of detox cures
Manufacturers often take pains to warn that during the course of detox, the need to urinate is frequent stools will change, bloating and flatulence will move as minor skin symptoms, fatigue, dizziness, etc. All this is normal since the process of removing toxins is on the way! In other words, the cure detox makes you sick at first but its good for you because you detoxify.
Dangers of colon hydrotherapy
One can opt for enemas, euphemistically called "colonic irrigation" or "colon hydrotherapy" it injects laxatives, herbs and then rinsed. The side effects (cramping, bloating, vomiting, hydroelectric imbalances) of this dangerous practice have been reported by doctors at the University of Georgetown.
Fasting: no unsupervised
There are also fasting, of course, not always without danger, especially when it is practiced in several days of treatment involving intense physical effort and it is not supervised by a physician or health practitioner recognized.
Detox daily
It is in the power of everyday lies the best detox: consuming the right amount of fruits and organic vegetables, so less loaded pesticides, drinking enough water as to facilitate the work of kidneys, respecting its needs sleep and regularly granting forest walks at the seaside or in the countryside, away from air pollution.
The Most Simple Thai Beef CrockPot Recipe in the entire world
Ive made some fantastic Thai recipes for the slow cooker, but got an email last week asking for a recipe for "stupid people" who dont want to chop or be in the kitchen for longer than about 12 1/2 minutes.
Dana is having her in-laws over this weekend and wanted to surprise her father-in-law with his favorite food: Thai Beef. She and her son are both gluten free, and they keep a gluten free household, but so far her in-laws dont really "get" the gluten free thing.
I feel your frustration Dana. I really do.
Here you go:
Totally Simple Thai Beef for stupid Everyday Regular People.
The Ingredients.
serves 4 to 6
2 pounds beef chuck roast
1 (8-ounce) bottle peanut satay sauce (Thai Kitchen is gluten free, or you can make your own with this recipe ---and if youre gluten free, you will of course use a GF soy sauce...)
1 (13.5-ounce) can coconut milk (full fat is best)
1 (16-ounce) package baby carrots (no chopping, Dana!)
cooked basmati rice for serving
1/4 cup chopped peanuts for garnish (optional)
The Directions.
Use a 6-quart slow cooker. Put the beef into the bottom of your cooker, and add the peanut sauce and the whole can of coconut milk.
Flip the meat over a few times to get it good and saucy. Add baby carrots (my dad says you have to rinse them off first). Cover and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours, or until meat is fork-tender and pretty much falls apart. Stir well to distribute sauce, and serve over hot rice.
Garnish with a sprinkle of peanuts, if youd like.
The Verdict.
Super tasty. The kids LOVED the meat, and ate quite a few of the carrots. The carrots cooked, but didnt get super soggy since they were on top of the meat. The baby is 9-months now, and I needed to use a bit of force to cut the carrots into finger food chunks with the edge of a fork for her.
Dana, I think your father-in-law will be happy!

Ive spent a considerable amount of time in Central and South America, and enjoyed many variations of ceviche, a traditional seafood dish. So I was intrigued when I recently found this raw vegan coconut ceviche. The lime marinade and coconut texture thats reminiscent of raw squid, certainly satisfied my taste memories of Costa Rica, Ecuador and Peru.

Why is it difficult to follow a diet
Whether a diet to lose weight, improve your cholesterol levels, due to food allergy, because you have diabetes, or for any other reason, it is never easy to follow. The Daily reports that the physician researchers studied, dissected these difficulties to understand and perhaps around more easily.
Why give up on you on a diet?
You started a diet and you do arrive. You move away in you want. Yes but why do not you get? Twenty people were interviewed during a study to try to rank their reasons to abandon his plan. Here there was a regime for high cholesterol, but it is possible that these same reasons also exist in the case of different diets and just as important to health.
4 reasons to abandon a plan
Four reasons were identified: A difficult relationship between doctor and patient "I do not believe what my doctor," for example, one participant in the study. Maybe doctors should care more about how their message across to the people they follow! Perhaps they should put the conviction, as if a doctor wants to lose weight while someone is overweight himself, it will be much less credible. Or, if he dares to consider that this diet is easy and obvious, which is never the case ??
The second reason why a diet is to interrupt a diminished perception of his own health problems. "After all, Im not so sick" or even "cholesterol, this is not really a disease." The problem that requires you to go on a diet you ultimately not seem that bad. So the investment you are going to put in this diet is very limit. A context Social Responsibility The social context can, too, make you leave your side regime. Eat, it is not just food. It is also a social act, a moment of conviviality and if you must eat apart, eat differently, refuse what they serve you, your morale can drop severely. This feeling of making voluntary social gap can be very difficult to bear and that is a major stumbling block on which a plan may fail. A common dietary pattern that must abandoner the food model you are used is being challenged by your plan. You are forced to change things that you are attached by tradition, habit, positive feelings. Behavior that has always been part of you must be abandoned and it is sometimes very difficult. For example, "I am a cheese region, I do not see myself stopping completely" ?? "The chips, it reminds me of my grandmother who was me every Sunday ?? "And give up these foods that are like food toys, foods that carry with them emotional values is painful. These four elements are factors involved in the brief stop, total abandonment, or just with the ups and downs in the monitoring of a plan. There are others, of course. But already you honestly ask the question "what really prevents me from following this diet? "Allows you to maybe take action. Instead of just saying "its too difficult," dissect these reasons help to cope better, rather than feeling guilty without being able to successfully act an important diet for your health.
Its a bit the principle of a task to do. If it is huge, you give up immediately. If you split it into small tasks, you are doing them one by one and you have a chance to finally achieve your big project. Similarly here, if you act on each opposing force to your diet, one after the other, you significantly increase your chances to get to hold him.
Sunshine Delicious Winter Recipes
I had reached the point of no return. Winter and I were through. I had enough, thank you very much, and was about to throw myself off the highest snow drift when my salvation arrived on the back of a UPS truck.Citrus from Florida. A case load. Sunshine in a box.
My mother sends one to each of us kids, every year, in the dead of winter. Shes been doing this since, well, since we all still lived under her roof. Thats the great thing about Moms – no matter your age, youll always be her child.
So, for the past week, Ive been in citrus heaven feasting on honeybells, temple oranges and ruby red grapefruit.
Honeybell oranges have a sweet honey flavor and a unique bell shape. Its mind boggling how much juice these possess.
Temple oranges are known as the Queen of the Crop. Peel one, let it melt in your mouth, and youll understand why she gets the honor of wearing the tiara.
Not a grapefruit lover? I bet youve never tried a plump Ruby Red. These seedless beauties are blushing red and dripping with sweetness.
Full of bioflavonoids and carotenoids which fight off cancer, fresh oranges and grapefruit also contain disease-fighting phytochemicals which help to combat heart disease. Whats not to love?
Here are two out-of-this-world, sunshine-delicious recipes I cant get enough of.
Purple Cabbage Saladfrom Elanas Pantry
½ head purple cabbage
1 orange, peeled and sliced into ½ inch segments
1 Tbsp olive oil
1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 Tbsp lemon juice
dash chili powder
Slice the cabbage as thinly as possible and place in a large bowl. Add the orange segments. Toss with olive oil, vinegar and lemon juice, then sprinkle with chili powder.
This gorgeous dish tastes even better the next day after the flavors have marinated and blended together.
Mixed Greens, Fennel & Orange Salad1 head leaf lettuce
1 head radicchio
2 heads Belgian endive, sliced
2 bulbs fennel, sliced
1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
3 oranges, peeled and segmented
1/4 C almond slivers
Dressing:
2 tsp fresh ginger root, finely grated
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1/2 tsp orange zest
2 Tbsp orange juice
3 Tbsp ruby red grapefruit juice
1 tsp raw honey
1/4 C extra-virgin olive oil
The crisp, licorice-flavored fennel, sweet orange and onions balance the slightly bitter tastes of endive and radicchio. Drizzle on the dressing and, sweet mercy, the symphony of flavors!
Whats been your source of culinary sunshine this winter?
Slow Cooker Creamy Turkey Dinner Recipe
A: Absolutely.
I havent bought condensed cream of something soup for about 10 years. I know this because Ive been married 11 years, and I know that during that first year of marriage I used this "wonder soup" a lot.
lots and lots. quite often, even.
I stocked up when the cans were on sale, and I gave myself a pat on the back when I saw them all lined up in the cupboard.
There is nothing wrong with using canned condensed soup.
Once in a while.
I dont personally buy or use it anymore because of our gluten allergy, and I although Ive learned there are non-glutenized soups now on the market, I still dont buy it because Ive gotten used to cooking without.
Im pretty much the furthest thing from a food snob. I figure whatever gets food on your table at the end of a busy day is good, whether thats Taco Bell, a frozen lasagna, gloppy condensed soup, or 365 (366) days of food from a crockpot. Its your choice.
This recipe was inspired from one of my early condensed soup crockpot meals I made (OFTEN) as a newlywed. This is a good dinner to eat in front of the TV while balancing a paper plate on your lap, sprawled out in an inflatable chair.
I miss our inflatable chairs!
The Ingredients.
serves 4-6
2 pounds turkey breast, cut in chunks
1/2 cup beef broth
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1 onion, thinly sliced
8 ounces sliced mushrooms
1 tablespoon dried parsley (unless you have fresh, then use about 1/4 cup at the very end)
1/2 cup half and half or heavy cream
1 cup frozen green beans (I like the long thin ones, not the thick weird ones they give you in the school cafeteria)
The Directions.
Use a 4 quart slow cooker. Put the turkey into the bottom of your cooker, and pour on the beef broth and balsamic vinegar. Add onion, mushrooms, and dried parsley. Stir a bit to combine. Cover and cook on low for 6-7 hours, or on high for about 4. If you only have a 6-quart slow cooker, this will cook much faster, unless you increase the quantities. Remember that slow cookers work the best when theyre at least 2/3 of the way full.
If you are going to use a 6-quart, check after 4-5 hours on low, or 2-3 on high.
If youd like the turkey super tender and shreddy, cook for a longer period of time on low.
Stir in the heavy cream and green beans. Cover and cook on high for another 30 minutes, or until beans are thawed and heated through. Serve over cooked pasta.
The Verdict.
My kids wanted me to call this "Winner Winner Turkey Dinner" (theyve watched a bit too much of Guy Fieri, lately). I liked the combo of beef broth with the touch of vinegar when paired with the mushrooms. Its tasty, and you dont end up feeling like you ingested a weeks worth of sodium.
Adam ate two plates, and took the leftovers to work for the next days lunch.
Im going to keep my eyes open for an inflatable arm chair.
