Tips to Starting Your New Year off Right

I appreciate a new year because it can be seen as a clean slate. A reason to reassess or re-evaluate what’s working in your life and what’s not. Some years I make a lot of changes while others not so many. But regardless, the new year is a time to stop, pause and reflect. Below are a few tips on how to start your new year off on the right foot.

1. Set an intention: It is hard to know where you are going without any direction. So, set an intention for the week, or the month, or the year - whatever you feel most comfortable with. A little secret I have? The interval class is hard for me. I’ve never really been a person that loves cardiovascular exercise. I do it - but not very frequently. One of my intentions for this month is to take 2 interval classes a week and push myself past my comfort zone.

2. Start your day off on the right foot: When you start your day off with a green juice, a great workout or that moment to yourself, it is so much easier to stay on track for the rest of the day. When we start off on a bad foot, our mind tells us “tomorrow is a new day, you can begin then.” One of the best ways to begin your day for overall good health is to have a large glass of warm water with lemon. I also add turmeric and cayenne pepper to mine. It is great for alkaline balance, detox, anti-inflammation, skin clearing and hydration. I’m sure the list goes on. It’s so much easier to stay on track when you’ve begun the day that way.

3. Go to bed earlier: I know - there’s a lot going on, especially coming back from the holidays, and the evening’s are when it’s oftentimes easier to get things done without distraction. But if you get the right amount of sleep, you are way more likely to be sharp and efficient, and you work faster and more effectively than if you are powering through while under slept. I honestly make it a habit to go to bed as soon as I get down all my kids - usually 9PM. I’ll read for a while before I go to sleep but anything I haven’t finished before that time can wait until tomorrow.

4. Be mindful: Do you have a tendency to eat a meal on the go or multi-task? If so, you’ll be amazed at how more efficient you are when you are mindful in your actions. When you try to talk on the phone and type an email at the same time, you find that not only are you not really listening, but you also end up with a bunch of typo’s; when you eat a meal while doing 10 other things, you are much more likely to eat more. So, challenge yourself to simplify - do one thing at a time and give your focus and attention to that one thing.

5. Have fun: If you are trying to implement a new eating or workout plan, make sure you are truly enjoying it. If you aren’t modify it so that you do!  Short-term habit changes are much more likely to stick if you’re having fun.

Best wishes in 2014!

Kalyn's Favorite Phase One Recipes from December 2013 were Turkey and White Bean Chili with Chocolate, Slow Cooker Southwestern Beef Stew with Tomatoes, Olives, and Chiles, Slow Cooker Frittata with Broccoli, Swiss, Cottage Cheese, and Parmesan, and Easy Shrimp Cocktail with Creamy Sriracha Cocktail Sauce.

I start every month by posting a round-up of the South Beach Diet Phase One Low-Glycemic Recipes from Kalyn's Kitchen and other blogs for the previous month, but there's something special about that post when it falls on the first day of a brand new year.  I love the way the new year is full of possibilities, and for many of us that means a chance to begin or resume a healthier way of eating.  My goal with these round-ups is to prove there's plenty of knock-your-socks-off delicious food to enjoy, even when you're limiting carbs or trying to choose low-glycemic foods.  And I can tell from my blog stats that a lot of people have already started on a healthier eating path, so I hope these recipe suggestions are useful for you.  Happy New Year everyone; I hope 2014 will be a delicious and healthy year for you.

The New Proposed Food Label

The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration), in order to help the public make healthier food choices, has proposed changes to the nutrition fact and supplement labels. The label was first established in 1993 (more than 20 years ago - wow!), therefore, it is well due for a change! Dont you think?!
The proposed changes include:

  1. Adding "added sugar" to the label. Added sugars have been in the spot light for quite some time now due to excessive intake causing health related risks including: obesity, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, etc. The daily recommendations for women are to not exceed 100 kcal/day (6 tsp of sugar) and for men to not exceed 150 kcal/day (9 tsp of sugar).
  2. Adding potassium and vitamin D to the label due to their public health importance. Potassium has been shown to assist with improving blood pressure. Vitamin D has many health benefits including bone health and improved immunity.
  3. Daily values will be updated for certain nutrients, such as sodium, fiber and vitamin D since their recommendations have changed throughout the past years.
  4. Calories from fat will be removed from the label because the type of fat is more important than the calories from fat.
  5. The serving size will be changed based on what people really eat vs what they "should" be eating. Lets face it, who eats only half a cup of ice-cream?! most people eat 1 cup.
  6. Foods and beverages that are consumed in one sitting will be labeled as a single serving. Example: Gatorade, has on the 20 oz bottle, nutrition facts for a serving of 8 oz. You would need to multiply the facts by 2.5 to get what you consumed in one bottle. The new proposal states that the nutrition facts should use the whole bottle as the serving since most people will drink it all. Same goes for a frozen dinner, chocolate milk, etc.
  7. Food and beverages that are larger but could be consumed in one sitting will have both calories per serving and calories per whole package on the label. Example: medium size bag of chips, ice-cream pint or 24 oz bottles of fluid.
  8. Design changes have also been proposed. Mainly changing the location of the DV% (daily value percentage) as well as bigger/bolder calories and servings font.
These are the 2 labels one against the other (taken from FDA website) - The left label is the current one and the one on the right is the new proposed label
Original Nutrition Facts Label        Proposed Nutrition Facts Label

For more info - FDA website has the full details.
What are your thoughts on the new proposed changes? Do you think it will cause less confusion and allow us to choose better when we go shopping?
If it gets approved, we will surely find out!

Health Expert Warns Against Kim Kardashian’s New Weight Loss Technique — ‘Your Organs Need Room!’

Kim Kardashian‘s latest attempt tocinch her waist is not a healthy option the reality TV star should be promoting, and a lifestyle and wellness expert exclusively tells RadarOnline.com why.

On August 21 Kardashian, 33, posted a photo on her Instagram wearing a mid-section hugging corset, tagging Whats A Waist waist training founder Premadonna.
“#hourglass #waisttraining #nophotoshopnecessary #whatawaist.com @premadonna87,” she wrote.

“Your organs needs room!” wellness expert and founder of Vertical Wellness, Shanna Israel, exclusively told Radar.

“You don’t want to create health issues due to ill fitting garments. Like any diet or practice, if you push your body the wrong way or force it into compromising positions there can be negative effects.”

Waist training involves wearing a corset-like device that will allow you to “instantly look 2-3 sizes slimmer” without any exercise or surgery, but experts suggest it’s actually moving the lower ribs in an unnatural way, which is why your waist appears smaller.

And Kim isn’t the only Kardashian who loves a corset.
In May her sister Khloe revealed her tiny waist following a 30-pound weight loss with an Instagram picture captioned:

“I love my waist trainer from @premadonna87!!!! Miss @blacchyna has me obsessed!!! Who doesn’t love to feel tight and right?!? #whatsawaist #waistgang #Fitness #GetItRight.”
“Tight clothes can impact your organs and possibly create cramping or breathing issues,” Israel warns.

“I know women in other countries wear tight corset like wraps to shrink their stomachs after pregnancy… I believe results differ based on each persons experience . Also, when looking at the success stories of others keep in mind you don’t know what else they are doing to lose weight. It could be a combination of factors.”

The FDA Just Approved A New Weight Loss Device That Blocks Your Brain From Feeling Hungry

The Food And Drug Administration has approved a new weight loss device that is implanted into the body, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The device, called the Maestro Rechargeable System, is for obese adults that “have a BMI between 35 and 45, who have at least one other obesity-related illness“.
The Maestro System is the first weight loss device to be approved since 2007. Enteromedics, the company that manufactures the device, has developed a technology it calls VBLOC, or “vagal blocking therapy.” The Maestro System delivers VBLOC Therapy through electrodes “that are placed in contact with the trunks of the vagus nerves just above the junction between the esophagus and the stomach.”
That sounds like a lot. Let me break down for you some of the science talk:
Basically, the device is implanted just above the stomach area in order to interfere with your body’s ability to send messages to the brain when it’s hungry. The result is that people tend to feel less hungry and eat less. The hope is that this will lead to sustained weight loss.
According to Enteromedics, over 600 patients have already been implanted with the Maestro System. With regards to safety, the device can be inactivated or completely removed at the patient’s desire.
The cost of the device has not been set, but it’s estimated that the price will be set for “somewhere between $20,000 and $30,000.”
