Deadly Food Combinations that may Harm Your Body

There are two types of people, first those who care about what they eat and second those who dont. If you are not careful about your diet then you might lose a few years of your life suffering from some stomach problem. My view is that we earn to live a healthy and prosperous life, but we cant be healthy if we dont look at what we eat. Here we are listing a few deadly combinations of food that should be avoided to keep ourselves healthy. Most of us, even those who care about their food habits, are not aware of these deadly food combinations.

Food Combinations that may Harm Your Body

Bananas and Milk

According to Ayurveda this combination is heaviest and toxin-forming. It creates heaviness in the body. But still if you like it then make sure that banana is very ripe and add cardamom and nutmeg to make it digestible.

Yogurt with Fruit

Ayurveda don’t advise mixing any sour fruits with dairy products. It diminishes digestive fire, produce toxins and cause sinus congestion, cold, cough and allergies. If you like the taste of Yogurt with fruit then make sure that Yogurt is not cold. You can mix honey, cinnamon, and raisins.

Fruit after a Meal

A regular meal contain fat, protein, starch and other elements that need to stay in stomach to get digested. While most of the fruits contain sugar, which needs no digestion and it passes through stomach after very short period of time. If your eat fruits after meal then that sugar stays in the stomach for a longer period and get fermented.

Protein and Starch

Protein and starches need different enzymes and different levels of acidity to be digested. If we eat them together then our body make a choice to digest protein. Undigested starch undergoes fermentation and leads to poisonous end-products. Grilled Cheese Sandwich is one of the best examples of such combination.

Tomato and Starchy Carbs

Tomatoes are acidic and should not be mixed with starchy carbs such as pasta. Carbohydrates should not be mixed with acids. It takes a lot of energy from body to digest this combination which cause digestive problems and after-meal fatigue.

Beans and Cheese

It will lead to gas and bloating. None of them alone can do that, but this combination.

Some other deadly food combinations according to Ayurveda:

  • Buttermilk with Cucumber
  • Milk with a salty food
  • Fish with yogurt or milk
  • Fruit with milk
  • Milk with meat
  • Dont drink buttermilk during night
  • Always use uncooked honey. Cooked honey turns into sticky glue.

Entertaining With Your Slow Cooker

Do not read this as "Entertaining Your slow Cooker." Even though I anthropomorphize probably more than I should, I do draw the line somewhere. :-)

Were fast approaching the season for entertaining. The Holidays bring about many reasons for getting together, and many different ways to utilize your slow cookers so you can get out of the kitchen and enjoy your guests.

This past weekend I fired up the Crock-Pot Trio, and brought it to a friends house for a Halloween Party. I put in three different dips/appetizers:

Sundried Tomato Dip
Brie with Apricot Topping (this gets a lot of mileage. Its a favorite with my friends)
Sausage, Cream Cheese, and Rotel Dip (aka "mommy crack")

The Trio works well, but the cord is terribly short and each of the 3 (2-quart) inserts has a spoon slot, which means you have to put down a layer of foil while cooking/heating so your food doesnt dry out. This isnt much of a problem, but it is something to be aware of while using.

We arent hosting any big parties this year, but in the past have really utilized my collection of slow cookers to prepare and serve hot appetizers, beverages, side dishes, and a variety of main courses. I love it that I can put the food on early in the day, then tend to the other chores around the house while dinner cooks itself.

I also appreciate the opportunity to mingle with guests as they arrive instead of fiddling in the kitchen.

The slow cooker is also an excellent way to bring a dish to a friend or neighbors house who is hosting the main event. Oven and stove top space can be hard to come by, but theres always
an extra outlet available--even if it means plugging the cooker into an outlet in the garage.

What are your favorite ways to use your slow cooker for entertaining? If you have any great recipes that work well to serve large groups, or any slow cooker entertaining stories, please leave them in the comment section. We could all use some new ideas for parties this time of year!

Tips to Starting Your New Year off Right

I appreciate a new year because it can be seen as a clean slate. A reason to reassess or re-evaluate what’s working in your life and what’s not. Some years I make a lot of changes while others not so many. But regardless, the new year is a time to stop, pause and reflect. Below are a few tips on how to start your new year off on the right foot.

1. Set an intention: It is hard to know where you are going without any direction. So, set an intention for the week, or the month, or the year - whatever you feel most comfortable with. A little secret I have? The interval class is hard for me. I’ve never really been a person that loves cardiovascular exercise. I do it - but not very frequently. One of my intentions for this month is to take 2 interval classes a week and push myself past my comfort zone.

2. Start your day off on the right foot: When you start your day off with a green juice, a great workout or that moment to yourself, it is so much easier to stay on track for the rest of the day. When we start off on a bad foot, our mind tells us “tomorrow is a new day, you can begin then.” One of the best ways to begin your day for overall good health is to have a large glass of warm water with lemon. I also add turmeric and cayenne pepper to mine. It is great for alkaline balance, detox, anti-inflammation, skin clearing and hydration. I’m sure the list goes on. It’s so much easier to stay on track when you’ve begun the day that way.

3. Go to bed earlier: I know - there’s a lot going on, especially coming back from the holidays, and the evening’s are when it’s oftentimes easier to get things done without distraction. But if you get the right amount of sleep, you are way more likely to be sharp and efficient, and you work faster and more effectively than if you are powering through while under slept. I honestly make it a habit to go to bed as soon as I get down all my kids - usually 9PM. I’ll read for a while before I go to sleep but anything I haven’t finished before that time can wait until tomorrow.

4. Be mindful: Do you have a tendency to eat a meal on the go or multi-task? If so, you’ll be amazed at how more efficient you are when you are mindful in your actions. When you try to talk on the phone and type an email at the same time, you find that not only are you not really listening, but you also end up with a bunch of typo’s; when you eat a meal while doing 10 other things, you are much more likely to eat more. So, challenge yourself to simplify - do one thing at a time and give your focus and attention to that one thing.

5. Have fun: If you are trying to implement a new eating or workout plan, make sure you are truly enjoying it. If you aren’t modify it so that you do!  Short-term habit changes are much more likely to stick if you’re having fun.

Best wishes in 2014!

Does Your Food Travel More Than You Do

Here in the arctic tundra northeastern Ohio, its a given that when you buy a fresh tomato, peach or bunch of grapes during the middle of winter, it could only have come from anywhere remotely nearby if grown in a hot-house. It will be June before I can head over to the organic farm stand down the road for some just-picked peas, collards and strawberries. Such is life in this climate.

But you could have blown me over with far less than a strong noreaster today when I started looking at the labels on my produce. Ever pay any attention to those annoying little things you have to peel off your fruits and vegetables? Me neither, but you can bet I am now and so should you. We may be surprised to find that a lot of what we buy isnt grown anywhere in the United States, warmer climate or not.

Until recently, most produce in major grocery stores was anonymous. The United States Department of Agriculture issued new country of origin labeling (COOL) regulations that went into effect on September 30, 2008. Suppliers and retailers are now required to provide COOL for a wide range of products, including fresh and frozen beef, pork, lamb, and chicken, as well as fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables.

How COOL Is This?

I still couldnt find labels on all of my produce, but lets take a look at what I did find. Heres a list of fresh (and I use that term loosely) produce I ate for breakfast and lunch, where it originated from, and the number of miles it traveled to get to me. It should be noted that the mileage I list is direct from point A to point B. In all likelihood, my produce traveled considerably farther before gracing my table.

Bananas – Ecuador – 2,886 miles
Blueberries – Chile – 5,177 miles
Apples – Washington – 2,024 miles
Oranges – Florida – 817 miles
Avocado – Florida – 817 miles
Kale – California – 2,088 miles
Collards – California – 2,088 miles
Cucumbers – Mexico – 1,917 miles
Tomatoes – Florida – 817 miles
Peppers – Mexico – 1,917 miles
Onion – Washington – 2,024 miles

So by the time I had finished lunch, my food had traveled 22,572 miles. Thats almost one full trip around the globe! Anyone else see the absurdity in this?
Frequent Fliers

Some food items, such as bananas, have always been imported and have wide consumer acceptance. The most obvious sources for out-of-season produce are Mexico, and Central and South America.

Check out this great resource from The Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture that shows common origins of more than 95 different produce thats shipped into or across the United States each year.

Heres a list of commonly air-freighted fruits and veggies and their country of origin:
  • Asparagus (Peru)
  • Bell peppers (Netherlands)
  • Tomatoes (Netherlands)
  • Blackberries (Chile)
  • Blueberries (Argentina)
  • Cherries (Chile)
  • Raspberries (Chile)
  • Peaches (Chile)
  • Nectarines (Chile)
  • Papayas (Brazil)
The Real Price of Imported Food

Trucking, shipping and flying in food from around the globe takes a toll on the environment and on public health. The National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) did a study analyzing the transportation-related impacts of importing agricultural products into Californias three largest ports – Los Angeles, Long Beach and Oakland.

The NRDC study showed that in 2005 alone, approximately 3 million tons of fruits, vegetables, cereals, nuts, and wine were imported from overseas into California by ship, airplane and truck. The California Air Resources Board estimates that 2,400 premature deaths, 2,800 hospital admissions for asthma, and approximately 16,870 missed school days were attributable to direct and indirect exposure to diesel pollution from freight transport activities within the state.

Almost 250,000 tons of global warming gases released were attributable to imports of food products — the equivalent amount of pollution produced by more than 40,000 vehicles on the road or nearly two power plants.

Keep in mind, were just talking about California here. Pretty eye-opening, huh?
Think Global, Eat Local

It stands to reason that produce thats traveled thousands of miles is not going to taste as fresh or be as nutrient dense as something thats just been picked this morning. And yet, when we shop at the grocery store today, we dont bat an eye at the sight of strawberries in the winter or perfect tomatoes from Holland. In the space of a generation, weve become accustomed to eating food thats never grown roots in local soil.

Its time we start paying attention to those little labels on our fruits and veggies to see how far our food traveled and begin asking our favorite grocery stores and restaurants to carry more local foods in season. We can support our local farmers by purchasing produce at a farmers market, or becoming a shareholder in a CSA. Check out Local Harvest to find one in your area. Better still, lets put our hands in some dirt and plant and cultivate our own food.

Have You Had Your Plant Blood Today

Fresh Veggie Juice
So have you recovered from the gluttonous feast known as Thanksgiving Dinner? Is it just my Hungarian clan or can your family turn a holiday (emphasis on day) into a weekend eat-a-thon too? Lordy! And to think I used to partake in the spree. Yikes, my insides hurt just thinking about all the calories and cholesterol.

While I no longer gorge myself on the traditional T-Day fare, I do partake in foods much richer than Im accustomed to eating — walnuts, pecans, almonds, dates, raw honey. I typically eat very simple meals of fresh fruits, veggies or sea vegetables, and my first meal of the day is always freshly extracted juice.

I noticed a difference in how I felt as soon as I opened my eyes on Friday morning. Heavy. Sluggish. A little bit fuzzy in my thinking. I didnt like it. Crazy to think that I used to feel that way all.the.time. Ick!

When I learned that Sunday was International Juice Feasting Day, I was all, "Count me in!" As I said, my first meal of the day is always a quart of juice, but sometimes I like to give my body a break and juice all my meals. After all, digestion is hard work. A periodic juice fast, or extended feast, is a wonderful practice to adopt.

People from 16 different countries joined Dave the Raw Food Trucker on Sunday for the first International Juice Feasting Day. If you dont know Dave, do yourself a favor and watch some of his YouTube videos. Heres a recent one I particularly love. Daves been juice feasting for 120 days and has dropped over 200 pounds. He has experienced an astounding transformation physically, emotionally and spiritually.

But one neednt juice feast for 120 days to benefit. My friend Kristen Suzanne calls fresh vegetable juice "plant blood" and I think its fitting for something thats loaded with organic water, chlorophyll, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes.

A juicer will separate the juice from the fiber, leaving you with only pure organic hydration. Thats water derived from plant sources, folks, and its essential for encouraging and nourishing healthy cells.

By removing the fiber, our digestive systems get a break and that nutrient-rich plant blood can pass directly into our bloodstream and start going to work on a cellular level. Its a terrific way to supercharge your immune system and purge loads of toxins from your body.

On International Juice Feasting Day, I enjoyed a quart of Beetific Elixir and a couple quarts of this Green Lemonade:
Green Juice
1 bunch Romaine
2 stalks celery
1 cucumber
1 handful dulse
2 Gala apples
1 lemon
1 inch fresh ginger root

Would you ever consider doing an extended juice feast like Dave?

How to Incorporate More Vegetables in Your Diet

For the college athlete, vegetables and fruits play an important role. Damage and inflammation occur in the body due to exercise and the main way to fight that inflammation is to incorporate more anti-inflammatory foods. Fruits and vegetables are highly anti-inflammatory and should be incorporated on a daily basis. In fact, the athlete has a higher demand for certain vitamins and minerals on top of the need to fight inflammation and therefore, there is a higher recommendation for fruit and vegetable consumption (at least 7 cups a day of fruits and vegetables combined). Most people love fruits and have no issues incorporating them into their daily routine, whether it be in a smoothie, as a snack or as a sweet ending to a meal. However, many struggle with how and where to add all those vegetables.

Here are some healthy ways to incorporate more vegetables in your daily routine:
  • For breakfast, add vegetables to your omelette such as spinach, red peppers, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, etc.
  • If having a breakfast burrito, consider adding salsa.
  • If having a smoothie consider adding things like carrots, beets, kale, spinach, celery, etc. My favorite juice is 50/50 100% orange juice and 100% carrot juice, yum! (note; any smoothie with vegetables needs to have a good balance of fruits as well or else it will taste kind of yucky).
  • Use vegetables as part of your daily snacking for example: carrots and hummus, celery and peanut butter/cream cheese, bell peppers and cottage cheese, tomatoes and Greek yogurt or just a vegetable mix (baby carrots, cherry tomatoes and cucumbers)
  • When making sauces such as tomato sauce add more vegetables to it, for example: saute onion, garlic, zucchini, squash and eggplant and then add the typical tomato sauce you use. That makes for a richer, tastier sauce
  • Use vegetable rich soups such as minestrone and salads as an appetizer.
  • Try to create a meal based on vegetables. Consider even going meatless for one day. Examples to try: vegetable stir fry, vegetable lasagna, big salad.

  • Have a side of salad each meal. Make sure you have variety so you do not get bored.
  • What ever vegetable you like, take 2-3 servings of it instead of 1. Example: if you like broccoli, have 2 cups of it, not just one.
  • If you like grilling, make sure you always grill some vegetables, whether they are in kabob form or not. See some ideas on previous blog or on Eating Well .
  • Always have cut up vegetables visible so that you will always be reminded they are there and they can be a good grab and go option.
  • Use shredded or pureed vegetables for things like muffins, cakes, meatloaf, meat balls, breads, casseroles, etc. Example of vegetables you can use: sweet potato, zucchini, carrots. Here is a zucchini, carrot apple muffin recipe.
  • When having pizza, make sure you sprinkle more vegetables such as spinach, onion, mushrooms, etc.
  • When you go to a party or dinner be the one that brings the vegetables. Typically thats the one thing lacking from a party.
  • If you are tired and dont feel like cooking, microwave frozen veggies. They are quick and easy. In fact, its the best "fast food" around.
  • If you enjoy using the slow cooker, almost everything done in it can have added vegetables. Example: add carrots, peppers and squash to your chili.
  • Stuff vegetables. Example: make stuffed peppers with meat and rice, stuff tomatoes with cauliflower mash and pesto, Stuff mushrooms with garlic, etc.
  • Add diced vegetables to your tacos.
All vegetables can be incorporated whether fresh, frozen or canned. I am positive there are far more many ways but these healthy ways are all simple and doable. They can help get any athlete to the 7 cups a day recommendation of vegetables and fruits.  Here are some easy recipes to help get you going.

Abdominal obesity is the biggest enemy of your health! life diets

Abdominal obesity is the biggest enemy of your health!

Abdominal obesity appears in two different forms. The first figure is the fat under the skin. The second is fat guts. They are found around the internal organs, which is the real enemy of health!

Thursday, May 2, 2013 fight against abdominal obesity
Abdominal obesity and health

How much should be weighed, Doctor? Its a common question, an important question. It is common because two-thirds of Americans weigh more than what should be their weight. It is important because excess weight goes to what is beyond the distortion of body shape. fats:

Responsible for high levels of cholesterol low-density proteins ("harmful") and triglycerides.
Reduce cholesterol high-density proteins ("good") at the same time.
Disruption of the bodys response to insulin, which leads to higher levels of blood sugar and insulin.
Contribute to the major causes of death and disability, including heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes and inflammation osteoarthritis, fatty liver and depression.
Responsible for approximately 1,000 deaths in the United States every day.
Given these risks, it is not surprising that you want to find out how much should be weight. But this question is common and what is important is in fact the wrong question. For health, the problem is not in how much is your weight, but in the level of abdominal obesity that you have.

Increase the size of the abdomen

During the past few years, attracted a number of studies of attention to the importance of abdominal obesity. Some research showed that abdominal obesity is a predictor of danger factor, more than body mass index (BMI).

For example, a study in 2008 conducted on 245 533 dollars that large waist circumference was associated with an increased mortality rate, even in people who have a normal body mass index (BMI). Another study showed the 2,229 victims of heart attacks that patients with large waist circumference had a higher rate of death, so that they have a low body mass index (BMI).

Deficiencies in body mass index (BMI)

Although the body mass index (BMI) is the official standard, but has several disadvantages.
Athletes professional people with big muscles and a few body fat can have a body mass index (BMI) of up to 32.
Perhaps BMI fails in that accurately reflects the level of body fat in adults who have lost a basic amounts of muscle.
The most important problem is that BMI reflects the level of total fat in the body without considering how to distribute these fats. Although there was no increase fat good, but the increase in abdominal fat is the worst case.

What makes abdominal obesity is very harmful? Scientists do not know why is certain, but new research offers important interpretations.
Abdominal obesity appears in two different forms. The first picture is of fat under the skin, which is located just under the skin. These fats behave the same fat found everywhere in the body. Its not friendly to your health, but it is not a source of danger particularly well. The second type is fat guts. They are found around the internal organs, which is the real enemy of health. Why?

Interpretations of early the entrails obesity was associated with excess activity of the bodys response to the pressure, making it produces large amounts of stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol.

There latest interpretation says that the entrails fat cells release their metabolic products directly into the blood that goes directly to the liver. As a result, the entrails fat cells that grow and are filled Balglsaredat triple pour excess free fatty acids in the liver (all fat is made up of free fatty acids). And this can be toxic to the liver. And free fatty acids accumulate also in the pancreas, heart and other organs, where it caused damage.

A third theory shows the complex nature of the fatty cells. The scientists believe that fat cells are just a place to store excess calories in the form of fat. But it is now clear that in addition to storing excess energy, fat cells produce a large number of proteins that enter the bloodstream and affect other organs. Some of these proteins leads to damage, and others can be protective. And entrails fat cells produce many harmful substances, with a little bit of useful material.

Measurement of abdominal obesity

The most accurate way to measure obesity entrails are imaging computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, the much easier way is to determine the ratio of waist to hip circumference. But many experts have turned up to a simpler method: measuring waist circumference.

To measure your waist circumference properly, you need a tape measure clothing stainless stretchable, not metal measuring tape drive.

GIVE your shoes stop with the put your feet next to each other.
Make sure to have your belly naked. Relax and exit . Not Pull exhalation the belly inward, it may give you better figure but will not improve your health. And the use of belt size instead is unrealistic.
Measure the circumference of your waist at the navel. And make sure you make the tape parallel to the ground. And record the measurement in inches with rounding to the nearest ten, and then repeat the measurement to make sure you are set correctly.
Check the table below to know what means the circumference of your waist for your health.
Waist circumference control

So, what can you do to reduce your waist circumference? You must forget the tummy tuck. Its good to increase the strength of the abdominal muscles, which may improve your health, but it does not burn abdominal obesity are optional. Tools that are reducing the fat is the worst, too, because they waste time and money without the lead to reduce the circumference of your waist.

You must forget liposuction. That surgery can remove fat under the skin of your torso, but not fat guts. Cosmetic surgery will improve your appearance and reduce your waist circumference, but will do nothing for the metabolism in your body will benefit your health.

Remember basic things. The only way to reduce the fat guts are losing weight, and burn more calories - by exercise - so that the amount of burning more calories that are ingested through food. Continuous weight loss requires reducing calories while increasing exercise. Here are some tips:

Reduce the amount of food in your meals.
Choose your wisely foods. And avoiding foods high in sugar and / or fat. It is caloric-ally dense, and slip into your stomach very easily. Instead, eat fruits and vegetables and whole grain products. Its high dietary fiber, and you need a longer time to eat, and probably Chbek more. Piece of chocolate, medium-sized and medium-sized apple, both of which contain about 100 calories (if already medium-sized). Now the thought of eating 5 pieces or 5 apples. It is clear that most people can easily eat the pieces, however, only few can finish eating all five apples.
Exercise more from the exercise. Walking two miles a day will significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure and early death. It will also burn calories. The man who weighs 200 pounds will be used about 220 calories in 30 to 40 minutes of brisk walking. That alone means the loss of about 30 pounds in one year - without any nutritional changes. The exercises also help in maintaining weight loss, unlike popular diets significantly. Secondly, it will burn excess abdominal fat, which is the thing that never does a tummy tuck and ways to reduce fat in certain areas.
In order to lose weight fast, each less and exercises more.
Male body shape

Abdominal obesity has many other names, including obesity, the upper part of the body, stem obesity and central obesity and obesity entrails. In terms of more versatile, also known as the belly of cola and shape of the apple and alternative cupboard. And thats where this type of fat distribution more common in males than in females, perhaps known as the male body shape.

According to the name, abdominal obesity is a form of risk - and abdominal obesity are increasing even faster than the body mass index (BMI) in our society. But by using a simple program of diet and exercise, can men with apple shape to lose weight. If you change the the "alternative Dolapk" will maintain your health.

How Old Is Your Heart Take A Quick Test To Find Out!

Is your heart older than you are?

Follow Foods For Long Life on Facebook and Pinterest.

Is Your Heart Older Than You Are?
I read an article this morning in the Wall Street Journal about a web-based tool that calculates the biological age of your heart developed by Unilever. Its based on the Framingham Risk Score and uses standard risk factors for heart disease and stroke.

I was very excited to take it (it took less than 2 minutes) because Ive always suspected that my heart was younger than my 65 year chronological age. Every time I enter my age in my treadmill or exercise bike it sets a really low target heart rate for me. So when my heart rate barely starts to rise, it tells me its too high when, in fact, I feel like I can push myself a lot harder.

The Test
The first two questions asks for your age and gender.  After inputting this, it immediately told me that the average woman my age has a heart that is biologically 7 years older than their chronological! So now Im starting to sweat it. What if my heart is actually older than I am? Do I have a 72 year old heart?

It goes on to ask about smoking, current medical conditions, and if your parents have ever had heart problems.

Height, weight, and waist measurements are next. It then asks for total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol levels as well as your systolic blood pressure (the higher, top number).

A few quick questions follow about blood pressure meds and whether or not you have diabetes. And then, voila- the results.

Diet and Exercise Make a Difference
My results were great! Although Im a 65 year old female, my heart is only 46 versus the average woman my age whose heart is 72 years old. Next time I have to input my age in my exercise equipment, I will enter 46!

My 55 year old husband took the test and has the heart of a 47 year old, despite his family history. His father had a major stroke at the young age of 49. The average 55 year old male has a heart of a 62 year old.

I can only assume that a plant-rich diet and lots of exercise has helped me have a heart that is 26 years younger than the average 65 year old woman and my husband to have a heart that is 15 years younger than the average 55 year old male, despite his family history.

TAKE THE TEST to find out the age of your heart!

More than 700,000 Americans have heart attacks each year and a quarter of all people in the U.S. die from heart disease. If your heart is older than you are, work with a good naturopath on a heart-healthy diet and exercise program.

Alternate vs Classic Resistance Training Can You Bench in Between Your Squat Sets Still Make Fabulous Gains

What now? Wait 3 minutes or off to the bench for an alternate set of bench presses or pulls ?
Traditional strength training with 80% of one-repetition maximum (1RM) utilizes 2- to 5-minute rest periods between sets. These long rest periods minimize decreases in volume and intensity, but result in long workouts. Performing upper-body exercises during lower-body rest intervals may decrease workout duration, but may affect workout performance.

The above is how Anthony B. Ciccone, Lee E. Brown, Jared W. Coburn, Andrew J. Galpin kick off their latest paper in the venerable Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research (Publish Ahead of Print).
Squatting will always remain the most versatile muscle builder & fat shredder

The purpose of the corresponding study was to compare the effects of traditional to those of alternating whole body strength training on squat performance. To this ends, Ciccone et al. recruites 20 youn men, who had to perform two workouts:
  • The traditional set workout (TS) consisted of four sets of squats at 80% of 1RM on a force plate with 3-minutes rest between sets.
  • The alternating set workout (AS) also consisted of four sets of squats at 80% of 1RM but with bench press, and bench pull exercises performed between squat sets 1, 2 & 3 with between-exercise rest of 50 seconds, resulting in approximately 3-minutes rest between squat sets.
For both workouts, sets 1-3 were performed for four repetitions, while set four was performed to concentric failure. The total number of completed repetitions, the peak ground reaction force (GRF), peak power, (PP), and average power (AP) of every squat repetition were recorded and averaged for each set.
Figure 1: Maximal # of reps on last set and average power in the classic vs. alternating condition (Ciccone. 2014)
Interestingly, there was no significant interaction for GRF, PP, or AP. Only, the volume-equated AP was ca. 5% greater during the TS condition (989 ± 183) than the AS condition (937 ± 176). A more pronounced difference which was yet still within the margin of one standard deviation (in this case 2.2. reps) was observed for the fourth squat set to failure, where the TS condition resulted in 15% more reps to failure (7.5 ± 2.2) than the AS condition (6.5 ± 2.2). Reason enough for Ciccone et al. to suggest that:
  1. Individuals who aim to optimize squat AP should refrain from performing more than three AS sets per exercise.
  2. Those who aim to maximize squat repetitions to failure should refrain from performing upper body multi-joint exercises during squat rest intervals.
Certainly a sound advice, but in the end, we all live in a world where time is a precious gem and some people give a fuck about average power and the number of reps until they fail.
Bottom line: The number of trainees I know whose interest in (1) average power and (2) maximal repetitions to failure exceeds their drive to improve their physiques is... well, lets say its not exactly high. In view of the fact that the study at hand does not provide any relevant information about a potential decrement in muscle gains due to alternate training and considering the fact that I dont need a study to tell you that the shorter rest times in-between sets and the incorporation of bench press and bench pull is going to help you shed that belly of yours, the majority of trainees, I know will still be better off training according to AS, i.e. with alternate exercises in-between the sets and 50s instead of 3 minutes rest between sets.

Figure 2: Changes in right leg 1RM during the experimental 6-month strength-training period in both groups and the relative changes after the short rest (SR) and long rest (LR) training periods (Ahtianen. 2005).
Ah, I almost forget, four of the subjects actually increased the number of reps they performed in the alternate condition - and the standard deviation for the average power is larger than the difference between the two conditions. If you still insist that 3-min of rest are necessary you may be interested to hear that shorter rest periods are (a) consistently associated with increased GH release (de Salles. 2009) and (b) previous studies comparing short (2 min) vs. long (5 min) rest times have shown increased size gains (Figure 2) even in a non-alternating scenario (Ahtianen. 2005) - the conclusion that longer rest times lead to higher gains, cause you can lift more weight / do more reps is thus obviously unwarranted.

Are You Taking Too Many Calcium Supplements Why It May Be Bad For Your Health!

Excess calcium supplementation can have serious health consequences.

Follow Foods For Long Life on FACEBOOK .

The Risk of Taking Too Much Calcium from Pills
I have often warned people about calcium supplementation.
* Not to take too many.
* Not to take them all at once.
* Not to take them without certain key complementary vitamins and minerals.
* To take the most absorbable form of calcium.
* To try to eliminate things that deplete the bodys calcium.
* To get the calcium you need from food other than dairy.

I want to revisit this topic because of an important study that was published last month (May, 2012) by Li et al in the journal, Heart. This study looked at nearly 24,000 men and women ages 35-64 who had never had health issues with their heart. The study found that those participants who took calcium supplements over an 11 year period were 139% more likely to have a heart attack compared to those who did not use any supplements. Those participants who took supplements that provided calcium plus other vitamins and minerals had an 86% higher incidence of heart attacks. They did not, however, record the amount of calcium that the participants took. (That would have been useful!)

These numbers are shocking but when you think about it, perhaps it shouldnt surprise us. After all, isnt hardening of the arteries from their calcification? So when you take 1,000 mg of calcium all at once (and many people do that so they wont forget to take it), your body cant possibly process it. When calcium is introduced to the body in the form of food, it takes it in more gradually. If you ate a cup of cooked turnip greens, youd get almost 200 mg of calcium, but your body would process it more slowly so it most likely wouldnt end up in your arteries! Researchers Reid and Bolland speculate that the excessive calcium from taking too many supplements at once "drives the antherogenic process" (the process that causes atherosclerosis).

Calcium Myths
There is so much misinformation about calcium that it is no surprise that people are either getting too much of the wrong kind or not enough. Unfortunately most of the information we get is from the companies that are pushing their products (i.e. the dairy industry or the vitamin companies) or doctors , many of whom have had very little formal training in nutrition.

Myth # 1 - Everyone Needs a Ton of it
Although the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for many vitamins and minerals are too low, I feel that the RDA for calcium is much too high. (Could the dairy lobbyists have something to do with this?) From ages 9 to 18, boys and girls are told to get 1,300 mg per day and men from 19 to 70 years of age are to take 1,000 mg. Women are told to take 1,000 mg from 19 to 50 and then advised to increase it to 1,200 mg per day after age 70! I have always thought this was excessive and now I realize that its also dangerous.

Calculating someones daily requirements isnt that easy. There are so many things that effect your calcium needs. For example, if you dont do things that deplete calcium, you wont need as much.

There are many things that cause your body to deplete its calcium store. They include:
* Too much animal protein
When the body metabolizes animal protein, it produces acids as a byproduct. To remove these acids from the body, they must first be buffered with calcium. This calcium comes directly out of our bones. The more animal protein we eat, the more calcium is depleted from our bones. This does not happen when we eat plant protein.
* Too much salt
If you eat too much salt the body will excrete more calcium in the urine. Salt is found in most canned foods. Restaurants, including fast food establishments, heavily salt their foods.
*  Too much phosphorus
The proper ratio of calcium to phosphorus is 1:1. If there is too much phosphorus, the parathyroid signals the release of calcium from the bones to balance out the phosphorus. The consumption of meat and processed foods containing chemical phosphates, especially soft drinks, causes a dangerous imbalance between these two important minerals.
* Too much sugar
Excessive sugar increases the urinary excretion of calcium and other minerals.
* Caffeine
 Even modest amounts of caffeine can cause the loss of minerals from your bones.
* Too much alcohol
Alcohol can increase excretion of calcium and inhibit its absorption.
* Medications
Many medications, like antacids, antibiotics, etc.,  can effect calcium absorption and/or increase calcium excretion.

Myth # 2 - Dairy is the Best Source of Calcium
Another common belief is that dairy is the best source of calcium. As I mentioned above, the consumption and digestion of animal protein causes calcium loss so even if dairy contains large amounts of calcium, it also causes the excretion of large amounts of calcium.
The most eye-opening chart from T. Colin Campbells book, The China Study, shows that the countries that consume the greatest amounts of calcium from cows milk ( the U.S., New Zealand, Sweden) have the highest rate of hip fractures. Conversely, the countries that have the lowest consumption of cows milk (Hong Kong, Singapore), have the lowest rate of hip fractures.

The best sources of calcium are:
* green leafy vegetables like kale, turnip greens, dandelion greens, mustard greens and collards
 (except for spinach which is high in oxalic acid that binds the calcium)
* broccoli, bok choy and okra
* blackstrap molasses
* soybeans,
* calcium-set tofu
* oranges
* sesame seeds and tahini
* chia seeds and flax seeds
* almonds and almond butter
* Brazil nuts
* dried figs
* dried herbs like savory, celery seed, thyme, dill, etc.

Greens are a great source of calcium

Other Things to Consider
Besides diet, one of the most important things you can do to build strong bones is to exercise. And its never to late to start! Studies have shown an increase of bone calcium in post-menopausal women who adopted an exercise regime of aerobic activity like walking, dance, etc, together with strength-training exercises.

What should I do?
So you can see that one size does not fit all. If you eat lots of animal food, heavily salt your food, drink tons of coffee, soda and alcohol and follow it up with a handful of anti-acids while sitting on the couch, you probably are losing bone and are depleting your body of calcium at a pretty good rate. If you and your doctor feel that you must supplement, here are a few guidelines that I live by:
* Take into account all the calcium you are consuming from food before you decide how much to supplement. This includes fortified orange juice, fortified cereals and bread and all of the high calcium foods listed above. Even the tap and mineral water you drink can contribute significant amounts of calcium per day. Add it up, you may be getting more than you think!
* Pick a supplement that is absorbable. I prefer calcium citrate and avoid calcium carbonate that requires stomach acid for absorption.
* If you take a calcium supplement, balance it out with magnesium. Experts suggest taking at least one half as much magnesium as calcium up to equal amounts.
* Make sure you are getting enough vitamin D.
* Divide your doses of calcium throughout the day so that you never exceed 250 mg of calcium per dose. Some set the limit higher than that but I dont feel comfortable taking that much, especially in light of this recent study.
* Get some exercise.

If on the other hand you have a plant-based diet, exercise, dont drink soda, coffee or too much alcohol, and arent taking medications, you may not need to supplement much or at all.
I personally only take one 250 mg calcium supplement per day in the form of a calcium-magnesium combination. On days I drink fortified almond milk, I skip my supplement all together. Since a recent test showed my bone density to be normal for my age, I dont plan to raise it. I dont consume dairy products of any kind so the leafy greens must be doing the trick!

My Main Message
My message to you today is to be very careful about chugging down the calcium pills. And pay particular attention to how much is already in fortified foods. Ive recently noticed that many non-dairy milks are heavily fortified with calcium. Its a bit unclear what RDA they are referring to when they state "provides 35% RDA" since the daily requirement changes with age and gender  (1,000 mg to 1,300 mg). But a cup of non-dairy milk that provides 35% of the RDA could be providing 350 mg to 455 mg of calcium. And some fortified milks brag that they provide even more! These levels of fortification can be dangerous.

February 24, 2013 UPDATE
A 19 year study in Sweden on the Long term calcium intake and rates of all cause and cardiovascular mortality, BMJ 2013  showed an increased risk of death from all causes of death and cardiovascular disease, but not from stroke, for women who had a high intake of calcium, especially when it was from supplements.
* Women whose intake of calcium of 1,400 mg or more per day from their diet were 40% more likely to die compared to women whose intake was 600 mg to 1,000 mg per day.
* Their risk of death increased to 157% higher if, in addition, they were also taking a 500 mg calcium supplement.
