The Power of Social Media
I have been asked through BlogHer to help showcase the far-reaching power of social media to help people in need.
Procter & Gamble, the makers of TIDE laundry detergent are selling "vintage" T-Shirts to help families devastated by disaster.
This is what P&G says on their Loads of Hope website:
Tide Loads of Hope helps in the aftermath of a natural disaster by providing clean clothes and a sense of comfort to families in need. Partnering with Feeding America, we travel to disaster affected neighborhoods with the Tide Loads of Hope truck or vans, our free mobile laundry service.
Tide Loads of Hope truck:
32 high-effiency washers and dryers stationed on the truck
Can do 300 wash and dry cycles a day -equal to one years worth of laundry for a single family
Will wash about 9,000 loads of laundry over a four-week period
Leveraged during massive disasters where electricity is unavailable in the region
Tide Loads of Hope vans:
In partnership with a local laundromat, the Tide Loads of Hope vans provide free laundry service at the same load rate as the trucks
Leveraged during disasters where neighboring communities still have a source of electricity
To date, Tide Loads of Hope has washed more than 35,000 loads of laundry for over 20,000 families. Most importantly, the Tide Loads of Hope program means were equipped to take action whenever and wherever there is a need in our country.
Tide Loads of Hope Vintage Tees:
Tide Loads of Hope can also be supported through the purchase of a Tide Vintage Tee. All profits go to support families affected by disaster.
Where it all started:
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the need for clean clothing became critical, and Tide found a way to help. So in November 2005, the Tide Loads of Hope truck headed to Camp Hope in the Metairie, LA area and cleaned over 10,000 loads of laundry. The spirit of this first venture informs and inspires everything Tide Loads of Hope program does.
How can you help?
P&G has asked us to help get the word out about their efforts to raise money via T-Shirt sales to support families that are affected by disaster in this one-of-a-kind program. The shirts are vintage-looking and support a great cause.
Shirts can be purchased through this link:
http://tidetshirts.pgvillage.com/c-9-show-all.aspx?_vsc=tide4
Please use this link (this helps distinguish the source, as we are having a good-natured contest between several social media companies - but of course, the goal is to get the word out about this great charity!)
So, heres what Im asking: If you are so inclined, please post a short blurb on your blog (regular blog is fine!) and/or tweet about the program, and share the T-shirt link with your readers. If you DO post about it, or tweet about it, will you drop by this form and leave me the links? (You can also share on Facebook or wherever floats your boat, too. BlogTalkRadio hosts? Podcasters?) We want to show P&G the power of social media!
thank you for your time, effort, and help.
xoxo steph
And!
A meatball soup is on the way. AND! you can totally use Coke instead of soda in brown sugar chicken. But.
it perhaps maybe will keep your kids up at night?
hmmph.

Practical guide for choosing a supplement of omega 3 long chain
What are omega-3 long chain?
They are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid, polyunsaturated fatty acid to 20 carbons) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid, polyunsaturated fatty acid to 22 carbons). These are the active forms of omega-3 in the body. They play a great many processes and have a beneficial effect on inflammation, platelet aggregation, triglycerides circulating in the blood, the brain, retina, etc. They are therefore of paramount importance ... but modern western diets supply shortly.
Omega-3 EPA and DHA plant Versus
Found in some plants (eg walnuts and walnut oil, canola, flaxseed) of alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid containing 18 carbons. It is the leading authority of the omega-3 series. It is tempting to believe that eating these plants, our need for omega-3 would be covered and the organization may work best ... but it is not. In fact, the active form in the body are EPA and DHA. Certainly, the liver can synthesize them from the plant precursor (alpha-linolenic acid, C18: 3 ω3) but with an extremely low yield of the order of a few percent. We rely on direct input into EPA and DHA for the proper functioning of the body.
Where do we find naturally EPA and DHA?
They are found in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring, anchovies, smoked trout, but also in the cod liver in small amounts in seaweed, in offal and the eggs (especially from hens fed flaxseed).
So: eat fish every day?
It would be a good idea if the seas and lakes are not polluted. Unfortunately we find many environmental pollutants in fish products, such as dioxins, PCBs and heavy metals. ANSES has also issued new recommendations for fish consumption She currently recommends fish 2 times per week 1 time with oily fish. The recommended dietary intake of EPA and DHA are currently 250mg per day, each, on average.
Taking dietary supplements of EPA and DHA?
Dietary supplements containing fish oil can also be a major source of pollutants, since the pollutants are lipophilic (they set in bold). It is therefore important to choose its products. There are quality labels and safety assessment.
Label EPAX
It ensures decontamination of dioxins, heavy metals and PCBs by a low temperature treatment (omega-3 are sensitive to heat) for 12 weeks. It is then absolutely necessary to choose a product with the label EPAX, not to expose themselves again to these pollutants.
Silver Label Quality
Omega-3s are particularly sensitive to oxidation (rancidity). Quality Silver label ensures product stability against oxidation (presence of plant extracts antioxidants). A product without this label could be rancid, so toxic (aggressive peroxides).
Note: EPAX Quality and Silver are not registered but quality labels (and safety). A manufacturer buys food supplements in fish oils for making capsules. It can therefore choose between different grades of oils. Some use small fish oils (eg anchovies, sardines), which ensures a lesser amount of methyl mercury, but not necessarily in other pollutants! For example sardine is less contaminated by mercury, but contains more dioxin than tuna (which contains more mercury it). [3] We must therefore require EPAX label. There are labels EPAX and Silver Quality in laboratory products Nutrixéal, LPEV and pileje, for example.
EPA or DHA?
EPA is generally used instead to cardiovascular sphere. It is the precursor of prostaglandin E3 (PGE3), anti-inflammatory molecule. It can be used for any inflammatory problem by adjusting production PGE3.
EPA is also omega-3 choice for emotional balance. A dose of 1000 mg / day is almost as effective as Prozac (antidepressant). Moreover, the EPA potentiates the effects of this type of antidepressant (inhibitor of the reuptake of serotonin).
DHA, meanwhile, is generally used for cognitive sphere (brain: memory, attention disorders, etc.) and the retina (the importance of DHA to the macula in the treatment of AMD). However it can also be used in cases of inflammation because DHA is the precursor protectins and resolvins (molecules involved in the resolution of inflammation).
Ethyl esters, phospholipids or triglycerides?
These are the three forms of omega-3 long chain marketed as dietary supplements. They are not equal. One study compared these three forms and was used to assess the bioavailability of each [4], verifying the presence of EPA and DHA in the membrane of cells (red in particular). The omega-3 form of phospholipids have better bioavailability than as triglycerides; ethyl-ester form arriving last.
Where to find omega-3 in the form of phospholipids?
Supplements of EPA and DHA are mostly based on fish oil. Here we find the form "triglyceride". This is due to the form of storage lipids in nature (in plants and animals). Those based on phospholipids may be of different origins:
- Based on egg yolks (DHA2 Dplantes)
- From fish heads (Ergyphosphoryl Nutergia)
- On Krill Oil or Euphausia superba end of zooplankton (Phosphokrill Nutrixéal, Oemine krill)
- To fish eggs (eg DHA Omegartic caviar Nutrixéal)
Krill Oil (NKO quality) and DHA caviar have the advantage of naturally contain astaxanthin, a carotenoid with powerful antioxidant action.
Supplements based phospholipies are generally more expensive than those based on triglycerides but may be more effective.

The Season Of Giving

Im starting to get asked more frequently now, "What diet are you on?"
My response of Im not on a diet is usually met with incredulous looks before the next question of "Oh, well what kind of exercise are you doing?"
I walk.
Yup, I have become a walker. Im like the Energizer Bunny – I just keep going, and going, and going...
Listen, a few short months ago, walking to the end of the drive was a big deal. I was morbidly obese and suffered from horrific edema. My feet and ankles didnt even resemble feet and ankles. My legs were like tree trunks. Finding shoes that fit properly was a challenge. Walking was not only difficult, but painful.
In addition to the other bzillion changes that have occurred since I began consuming raw, living foods, I feel (and look) like Ive been wrung out to dry. All that excess fluid my body was hanging onto is gone. Ohmygosh, I have ankles. Who knew?
So, yeah, I walk. And, I walk with gratitude each day. Because I can.

BENEFITS OF WALKING
- Burns stored fat
- Strengthens back muscles
- Easy on your joints
- Shapes and tones your legs and butt
- Reduces stress
- Reduces risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes
- Can be done almost anywhere
- Requires no equipment
- Its Free!
The routine the last few months has been to roll out of bed and hit the pavement. Ill typically walk anywhere from 3-5 miles each morning and another three miles each evening. I also enjoy spending time in the woods, so in addition to the daily routine, Ill take a nice long hike several times during the week.

I dont know what its like by you, but here, it feels like autumn lasted about a millisecond. Winter has arrived. Weve been hammered with snow the past couple of weeks. My walking partner Maya, the Siberian husky, thinks shes died and gone to heaven. Me? Not so much.
Its cold. Its dark outside. I have too much to do.
I know myself all too well and, trust me, the excuses will only increase now that the holiday season is upon us. So, I am enlisting your help to keep my walking on track.

For every random act of kindness you perform this holiday season, I will walk one mile between now and the New Year. Just contact me here and post in the Comments what youve done. Ill even give you the date and time of your walk, so you can cheer me on, or better yet, join me.
There are many ways we can give during the holidays without making a trip to the mall. The spirit of the season can best be expressed through the joy of caring and sharing. Sometimes when we are generous in small, barely detectable ways it can change someones life forever.

- Visit a nursing home and spend time with someone who doesnt get visitors.
- Volunteer a couple hours of your time at a local homeless shelter, crisis nursery or soup kitchen.
- Bake some holiday goodies and take them over to the fire station.
- Request one of the many “letters to Santa” that your post office receives at this time of year. Play Santa Claus and send something on the list in time for Christmas.
- Write a note of appreciation to your mailman.
- Cut coupons out and leave them at the grocery register for others.
- Send a card to someone in the military overseas.
- Shovel your elderly neighbor’s driveway or clean the snow off their car.
No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.

Signs of a Heart Attack in Men Warning Symptoms
Heart Attack is a life threatening medical condition in which immediate medical attention is necessary. Usually our body shows some symptoms before Heart Attack. Some early signs are ignored by us. Most of us think the heart attack occurs just like shown in movies, when suddenly severe chest pain occurs and the person falls on ground. In real life heart attack signs and their severity differs from person to person. We should never take these warning symptoms of Heart attack lightly. Heart Attack symptoms of Men are different from women. This difference of symptoms is due to difference in internal structure of organs.

Signs of Hear Attack in Men

Most Common Symptoms of Hear Attack in Men
- Chest pain
- Chest discomfort
- Chest pressure
Less Common Symptoms of Hear Attack in Men
- Discomfort or pain in arms, neck, jaw, back, or stomach
- Abdominal Discomfort
- Shortness of breath
- Lightheadedness
- Sweating
Note: Usually men feel more chest pain during heart attack. Diabetic people can have heart attack without feeling chest pain.
Heart Attack symptoms can appear and disappear after few minutes. So dont take these waning symptoms lightly. These symptoms can appear again in much severe condition. Always remember that heart attach signs of two different people are not always same.
Dont wait! report in Immediately
Once you feel that the symptoms you are feeling resemble to a heart attack, dont wait any more. Call 911 or local ambulance service to get you to the hospital. Most people wait for hours before taking these steps. It can be a life threatening condition. As soon as you reach hospital doctors will give you clot dissolving medicines and damage to the heart muscles will be minimal. Else the damage will be severe and some of your heart muscles will be permanently damaged.
Hair Loss Advertisement Truth of stopping the hair fall
Hair Fall is the oldest and most common problem than men and women face after entering 30s. A lot of researches have been done about this thing. Primary motive of all of these hall fall researches is to stop hair fall. Every research want to advertise a product as a solution to hair fall. That product may be a medicine, an oil, a shampoo or a diet supplement. Sometimes when i think about it, i find that the actual motive of these researches is not to stop hair fall, its main objective is to promote a product.
Whenever you watch a hair loss advertisement of a hair oil, shampoo or conditioner, you will definitely hear a statement regarding a research that shows this... a research that shows that...... Isnt it rubbish. These researches are funded by the company which is launching a product. They ask the researchers to take the research to a result that shows that their product works or its better than others. You already have a conclusion in your hand and you have to just prove it. Here you cant prove anything else because either the research lab is owned by product itself or its funded by product making company.
Hence the truth is that we are living in an era of advertisement where advertisers know how to play with the mind of viewers. Viewers hear whats on TV, viewer watches whats on TV, and then viewer buy whats on TV. The better the advertisement the better the sale. Hair fall treatment is one of the most desired treatment now a days. A Research statement makes the product more promising. The viewer or the end-user thinks that the research must be true and these doctors must be telling truth. They dont know that in most of these ads the doctor is just a model with good hairs who is getting paid by the advertiser.
I am not against these hair fall treatment products. But most of them dont work. Some times they work but thats too due to the psychological effect. Real problem that leads to hair fall is stress, and sometimes the falling hair itself becomes stress. If the hair is falling due to dandruff then the shampoo or oil might help but if the stress is the main reason behind hair fall then it may not. No hair oil or shampoo can remove stress.

Rosacea Alzheimer’s of the Face
Is Rosacea Caused by Amyloid LL-37, as Alzheimer’s Is Caused by Anti-microbial Abeta?
A recent article in PLoS One (Thanks Daniel!) suggests that the amyloid beta (Abeta) proteins that aggregate to form fibrous plaques in the brain tissue of Alzheimer victims, function as typical defensive anti-microbial peptides (AMPs), similar to the LL-37 cathelicidin implicated in facial tissue in rosacea. The structural and functional similarities of Abeta and LL-37 suggest to me that Alzheimer’s and rosacea may also be similar in initiation and treatment. Let’s compare amyloids and AMPs.
[The figure shows a model protein (from ref.) used to examine stain binding to amyloids. The stains appear to bind to aromatic amino acids spaced evenly between adjacent proteins, but adjacent basic amino acids (blue) are spaced the same way and provide sites for heparin binding.]
Amyloids:
Anti-microbial Peptides:
Abeta Is Anti-microbial Like LL-37
Amyloid beta is the well-known source of the fibrous plaques forming brain lesions in Alzheimer’s disease. The normal function of Abeta has not been firmly established. The recent article shows data to support Abeta as an anti-microbial peptide comparable to LL-37 against several pathogenic bacteria and yeast. Knock-out mice deprived of a gene corresponding to Abeta are susceptible to bacterial infections. The anti-microbial activity present in extracts from Alzheimer’s disease brains was inactivated by anti-Abeta antibodies.
Implications of Abeta as an AMP Like LL-37
The similarities between AMPs and amyloid peptides suggest some implications for both Alzheimer’s disease and rosacea. Vitamin D is a hormone that binds to a cytoplasmic receptor and the vitD/receptor complex then acts as a transcription factor that controls the expression of defensins in the intestines, LL-37 in facial skin and perhaps Abeta in brains.
Amyloids form fibers on a scaffolding of heparan sulfate (HS). There is usually an excess of HS on the surface of cells and the HS is rapidly recycled back into cells. During inflammation, mast cells release heparin, short fragments of HS, that should also inhibit amyloid fiber formation on HS. Chronic inflammation, however, reduces HS production and may set the stage for amyloid fiber formation. HS metabolism of the brain may be vitally important to the development of Alzheimer’s disease, especially since the increasing chronic inflammation of aging people should deplete brain HS.
LL-37 forms complexes with DNA from damaged host cells in rosacea skin. The LL-37/DNA complexes trigger TLRs and inflammation. LL-37 may normally bind to cell surface HS and chronic inflammation of the skin may cause the shift to pathogenic autoinflammation. Topical application or perhaps low dose IV heparin may be effective in disrupting the autoinflammation due to LL-37. Part of the toxicity of LL-37 in the skin may be due to amyloid like structures that could form with inadequate HS and overabundant LL-37 production. Vitamin D metabolism should also be very important, since LL-37 synthesis is controlled by vitamin D. This is consistent with the benefits that some rosaceans observe with high doses of vitamin D3 supplements.

Amyloids:
- Amyloid proteins/peptides align into stacks and fibers
- Stacked beta sheets bind amyloid stains: Congo Red, Thioflavin-T
- Fibers form on anionic polymers: heparin, DNA
- Short amyloid stacks are toxic to cells
- Proteases produce multiple sizes of amyloid peptides

Anti-microbial Peptides:
- AMPS typically contain heparin-binding domains -- basic peptides/ plus charge
- Some AMPs, e.g. LL-37, form fibers on DNA, heparin (stain with amyloid stains)
- Toxic to cell membranes
- Kallikrein stimulated by gut flora migrates to face and clips LL-37 to a smaller peptide that binds to host DNA and stimulates the TLR receptor to produce inflammation
- Stomach pepsin hydrolyzes dietary proteins into anti-microbial peptides (heparin is secreted by mast cells onto to the intestinal surface to protect from any amyloid-like effects)
- Defensins, cathelicidins and other AMPs are under transcriptional control of vitamin D receptor

October Word of the Month Space
Our word of the month for October is SPACE which is a continuation from September of The Dailey Method Secondary Alignment Principles: Stability, Space, Support and Smile!
As we Align/Engage/Move (our primary alignment principles) we can get even deeper by putting intention on the “4S’s” mentioned above. In September we practiced STABILITY, focusing on foundation, grounding, arriving, noticing, connecting with breath, and feeling/finding stability within. Keeping the supportive foundation and practice of STABILITY, we can expand our focus to making SPACE.

Truth: “SPACE” is a step many of us skip (in TDM practice, and in life) because we’re impatient, controlling, distracted, rushing… or just eager, excited and ready to GO NOW! In class you may want to get right into your strongest plank, thigh-work and seat-work. In life, we often plow forward to fit it all in, rarely pausing between one thing and the next. SPACE is about noticing these tendencies, and making choices to open up to a deeper experience. Space is exactly what we need to get that AMAZING class/life we are constantly striving for. If we remember to pause and take a breath, make space… guess what? Plank, thigh-work and seat-work are deeper and stronger and feel way better! And the same can go for the larger arena of our lives.
Here are some ways to start creating more SPACE for yourself right now:
NOTICE. Every time you arrive in your practice, take a few seconds to just notice your body (sensations), your mind (thoughts, your brain-machine never stops generating), and your heart (emotions that are present right now). Fully arrive and begin your practice with intention. As soon as we NOTICE sensations, thoughts and emotions, we can separate from them. If we can observe them, we are not them and we don’t need to be controlled by them. Notice. Observe yourself.
SOFTEN. What??? Not the word you think of first in an exercise class, right? Try it. When you’re coming into thigh-work, soften first, notice your stability and then breathe. This softening not only centers your body and mind, it also immediately opens up SPACE, and sets the stage for better alignment and a deeper experience. When you soften and breathe, you find better foundation, your collar bones widen, your heart opens, your lungs expand, your energy flows, and your senses heighten. It allows the bones of your body to more properly align naturally, without you forcing it. Softening allows you to invite, receive, respond, center, connect, expand and be open to possibility.
INHALE. One of the best ways to make more space is to take a deep breath. See if you can refine your breathing practice this month, noticing what happens every time you breathe in. Use your inhalation to find space and length from your heels through the crown of your head. Inhale to expand your heart and lungs! Feel stuck in an exercise? Feel stuck in life? Take a deep breath and inhale.
FOCUS. With focus and attention we can create space in our bodies. Here are some things for you to practice in class and cues you will hear from your Teachers to help you find more space:
- Move your inner thighs in, back and apart to widen your sitz bones- this will create space in your SI joint.
- Broaden and laterally expand your legs and pelvis apart- this allows the thigh bones to stabilize deeper in the pelvis and better align your knee joint.
- Practice breathing more space and length into all four sides of your body (side body long) from your hip-bone to bottom rib. Making more SPACE in your torso on all sides will enable you to get deeper in abdominal work and allow for greater length and range of motion for your spinal cord.
- Draw your arm bones slightly upward and widen your collarbones- this will allow optimal shoulder alignment and greater range of motion for your shoulder girdle.
- Feel better cervical alignment by lifting your jaw line parallel to the floor and allowing your throat and back of skull to ease back, bringing your ears over your shoulders into your plumb-line- creating a healthy cervical spine curvature.
- Notice how the small expanding adjustments impact the way you feel in your positions. All of these actions work to help you place the bones in better alignment and should add EASE to your body prior to the deep muscular engagement that will come next with SUPPORT.
ACCEPT & ALLOW. A big part of making SPACE is accepting and allowing. Showing up for your practice every day also means noticing, accepting and loving your body every day exactly where it is. Accept ebbs and flows, in practice and in life. Allow for setbacks. Make your TDM practice a physical, mental and emotional SPACE that is supportive, centering, positive, honoring, and empowering. Accept. Allow. Then MAKE SPACE in every way you can so you are also ready to expand, evolve and transform. That’s a life practice, and one that never ends!
We are holding a BIG supportive space for all of you, and for this amazing extended TDM family.

August Word of the Month Move

When we are young and healthy, we don’t tend to give movement much thought – we get out of bed each morning, get dressed, exercise, work, play, and relax without much conscious thought applied to HOW that all happens in our bodies. We take for granted the healthy functional movement of our bodies. As we age - and perhaps encounter our first injuries, aches and pains - we may suddenly become more aware and interested in how we can heal injuries that do occur – and better yet, how we can prevent them in the first place. The great news is that an alignment-based practice like The Dailey Method empowers us to stay healthy and strong in our bodies throughout the years. By training our brains and bodies to be more aware and more intentional in our movements, we can experience freedom and happiness in our bodies regardless of age. In fact, many “older” students report feeling significantly better about their body health and strength at their current age thanks to their TDM practice!
So what’s the “secret” to learning how to MOVE with ease and freedom? Structure and boundaries. We experience freedom of movement by having structure (when we ALIGN our bones intelligently & intentionally) as well as boundaries (when we ENGAGE the support of muscles to set safe boundaries). While words like “structure” and “boundaries” may sound limiting and un-fun, they actually are not. The same way children grow and thrive with healthy structure and boundaries, our bodies crave support and balance. If we are sedentary, our body and movement boundaries remain stagnant and typically become more limiting with time and age. On the other hand, if we engage in regular TDM practice, our boundaries EVOLVE continuously! With understanding and practice comes awareness, engagement, support, strength, flexibility and balance. Each new challenge creates change, and each time we practice is an opportunity to meet and embrace our BEST selves here and now.
I encourage students each time they practice to “check in” mentally and physically again & again – notice your alignment, engagement (also notice your thoughts and internal dialogues) and always ask if you are supporting yourself in the best way you can right now. Then notice if you are working at your edge – if you consistently work at your edge, your circle (your boundary) will continue to expand, so the practice never ends. In fact, the practice becomes so ingrained that it becomes part of your everyday life. I truly love how even after 14 years of my Dailey Method practice I still can continually find better alignment, deeper engagement, a new edge and positions of greater ease. I feel like my boundaries will always continue to expand and that’s exciting!
As you bring awareness to how you MOVE this month, I encourage you to do the following:
- Always “check in” to make sure you align and engage to the best of your ability first. Always move from a place of stability and support. Set your safe boundaries with muscle engagement. Every body is different.
- Sometimes, choose not to move. It is an advanced practice to know when your alignment and engagement are telling you to re-set, stay in a base position, or modify an exercise. Often times just taking a moment of stillness and focusing on one or two breaths will allow you to come back to that reset. Every day will be different, so allow that – don’t let a setback, sickness, injury or off-day discourage you; use it as an opportunity to simply practice and let go of expectations. Where you are is perfect.
- When you choose to move, move while maintaining alignment and engagement. Experience those things as your supportive structure and boundaries. Feel empowered by your ability to create that structure for yourself.
- Find your edge. When you feel mindfully aligned and engaged, you don’t have to play it safe right in the middle of your comfort zone – TRUST the work you’ve done & try to move and challenge yourself! Check back in: Are you still aligned and engaged while moving? If so, can you push even closer to your new edge today? Again, every day will be different so embrace your personal change and progress!
- “Move and Breathe.” I stole this from one of my favorite parenting coaches, Cathy Cassani Adams, who is a TDM student. It really is that simple. Be present. Be aware. Connect your movements with breath. Feel your body as you Move and Breathe.
- Feel the Dailey Dance. Movement in TDM should feel fluid & graceful, and there should always be an element of ease. Let your inner dancer shine out. Be in the flow of your practice and your life.
- ENJOY! When you move with the support of structure and boundaries it should feel GOOD. Appreciate what it’s like to FEEL GOOD IN YOUR BODY. Don’t take it for granted, and recognize the work you have done to make this freedom possible.
Move with intention this month. We’ll be with you every step of the way!

March Word of the Month Stillness
It’s amazing to me that March is already here. I know that many parts of the Country have had a strong, forceful winter, but here in California it feels like winter is just beginning.

Because I grew up in Colorado, I still think of winter as a time of darkness and cold-stillness but also as an opportunity for deep regeneration and radiant inner growth. In winter the Earth turns inward to reset and renew - and invites us to do the same. This is why I’ve chosen Stillness as the word of the month for March. Also because I’ll be going to Mexico and will be lying still on the beach for several hours each day :).
Stillness is always within us but it is so hard to get and to stay there because of all the chaos in our lives. Embracing stillness is about being versus doing; feeling content, wise, calm, and finding inner peace. Stillness really is the ideal source of every right intentioned thought and action.
Ellen DeGeneres has a quote most of us can relate to: "I get those fleeting, beautiful moments of inner peace and stillness - and then the other 23 hours and 45 minutes of the day, Im a human trying to make it through in this world." This is why a mind/body/breath practice like The Dailey Method is such a powerful tool to have in your life -- we practice finding "stillness" in the studio using mind/body/breath so we can take that practice into our lives.
Practicing stillness is an opportunity to go deep to our own core, connect, and plant the seeds we want to nurture and grow within ourselves. Maybe today we can find 5 minutes of beautiful stillness... tomorrow maybe 6... with practice over time, (rumor has it) we can learn to find stillness anytime, anywhere, and our outer world more and more becomes a reflection of what is within. I want that!
So I hope this month to find a little more stillness in my practice, in my mind and in my every day.
With Love,
-- Jill
P.S. I want to continually thank Lorna Samatas, Elmhurst Studio owner, for her insight, intelligence and guidance in helping me with my regular word of the month for The Dailey Method.
September Word of the Month Transition
September is always a time of transition. Long summer days give way to the change of pace that fall always brings. Kids go back to or start a new school for the first time, and we transition to a new routine or back into an old one. At the very least we all have to adjust to the fact that summer is over! It is so important to manage transitions mindfully both in life and in class, which is why I have chosen TRANSITION as our TDM word of the month for September.
I have personally set the intention to focus on the “now” in the transitions rather than looking backwards or looking forward. I will try not to let changes scare or overwhelm me and to know that the change or transition I am going through will make me stronger and better able to embrace the one constant: change!

For me there is true comfort in the fact that I can focus on graceful transitions with physical practices like The Dailey Method. It always helps me to take class and find presence when I am dealing with something challenging! I hope it helps you in this way too.
Here’s to Fall, and to finding comfort, growth, and ease in new routines!

Slow Cooker from Scratch Celebrates a Year of Slow Cooker Food!
![]() |
| A Year of drool-worthy recipes from Slow Cooker from Scratch, and many are South Beach Diet Friendly! |
A year ago I started my second blog, Slow Cooker from Scratch, and what a year of slow cooker deliciousness it's been! I was a pretty committed slow cooker user even before I started this new site, but this blog spotlighting slow cooker recipes that use from-scratch ingredients has really opened my eyes to the variety of things that can be made in the slow cooker. Slow Cooker from Scratch is what's called a "curated" blog, which means I don't cook and photograph all the recipes myself, but they are carefully selected by me. And since I'm focused on recipes that are South Beach Diet friendly, it's no surprise that many of the recipes I'm choosing to highlight on the new blog are things that might appeal to readers from Kalyn's Kitchen.

Recipe for Sun Dried Tomato Pesto or Spread and a tribute to Lis Queen of the Daring Bakers
(Updated November 2013 - One of the best things about blogging is the amazing way that people you'll never meet in person can touch your life in the virtual world. This week the food blogging community was stunned and saddened to learn about the death of Lisa Cifelli, co-founder of The Daring Bakers, who died at the far-too-young age of 44. Through The Daring Bakers, Lis encouraged others to challenge themselves with amazing recipes for baked creations of every type, and her enthusiasm and generosity was part of the reason this blogging event eventually had thousands of contributors every month. I was never a Daring Baker, but I enjoyed following along each month as the bakers shared their posts, and I "knew" Lis through other events like the one featured below. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, and I'm dedicating this post to her memory.)

My Italian is pretty basic, although I studied it a bit when I was going to be traveling to Italy, and I'm learning ingredient names from my great friend Ilva's blog. But I know enough Italian to guess that Festa al Fresco means something like a feast of fresh ingredients. So when I heard Ivonne of Creampuffs in Venice and Lis of La Mia Cucina were hosting La Festa al Fresco, I was excited about participating in the biggest virtual food bloggers picnic ever.Lemony Shrimp Salad with Avocado Heart of Palm and Feta
![]() |
| This Lemony Shrimp Salad with Avocado, Heart of Palm, and Feta was a definite winner! |
Shrimp Salad is a family tradition with the Dennys, and my Shrimp and Macaroni Salad is something I used to make regularly for my dad, as well as making it for family parties for many years. There are also other good shrimp salads on the blog, but I wouldn't dare substitute any of them for Shrimp and Macaroni Salad at a family gathering. Until now. This Lemony Shrimp Salad with Avocado, Heart of Palm, and Feta was so satisfying that I think most of my family would happily devour it. (There are a couple of people in the family who hate avocados, go figure.) The day I tested this recipe with Jake, we tried it out on a friend who stopped by, and she gave it two very enthusiastic thumbs up. I'm sure I'll never stop making Shrimp and Macaroni Salad for my family, but when I want a phase one treat with shrimp, this is the salad I'll be making.
